What is the Orbit?

It consists of the bony cavity surrounding the eye, the extraocular muscles, orbital tissues, and fat, and its function is to protect and stabilize the eye.

Types of Orbit Surgery

Orbital Surgery: A type of eye cosmetic surgery, with several types, including:

• Surgery for exophthalmos due to thyroid gland dysfunction (Graves’ disease)
• Orbital tumor surgery
• Orbital fractures
• Orbital reconstruction

Surgery for Proptosis Due to Thyroid Dysfunction (Graves’ Disease)

Cause:

• Thyroid hormone secretion imbalance.
• Autoimmune thyroid disorders.

Symptoms:

• Eye bulging and eyelid retraction.
• Dryness and irritation in the eye.
• Redness and swelling.
• Double vision and vision loss.

Treatment:

• Surgery to relieve pressure on the optic nerve.
• Accurate treatment determination in consultation with an ophthalmologist.

Orbit Tumor Surgery

It is the growth of tumors, which can be congenital or acquired, benign or malignant.

Symptoms:

• Ranging from blurred vision and double vision to pain, swelling, and proptosis (eye bulging).

Diagnosis:

• Comprehensive examination with imaging tests like CT scans and MRI.
• Surgical examination may include a biopsy to determine the tumor type.

Treatment:

• Surgery to completely remove the tumors is the optimal solution.
• Alternative options include radiation and chemotherapy, depending on the tumor type.

Orbital Fractures

Causes of Injury:

• Car accidents, falls, sports injuries, assaults.

Types of Injuries:

• Tear of the eyelid, tear duct injuries, orbital hemorrhage, fractures in the orbit.

Common Types of Fractures:

• Fracture of the lower orbital wall leading to enophthalmos (sunken eye).

Treatment:

• Repair of the orbital fracture to prevent the eye from sinking into the orbit.
• In case of enophthalmos, surgical repair and orbital reconstruction can be performed.

Orbital Reconstruction

In some cases, enucleation of the eye may be required for reasons such as tumors, infections, or deformities. These surgical procedures are of two types:

Eye Content Evacuation:

• Involves removing the contents of the eye while preserving the sclera, muscles, and orbital tissues.
• It provides better cosmetic results and maintains a natural appearance after surgery.

Enucleation with Eye Removal:

• Involves removing the entire eyeball, including the sclera in some cases.
• It is necessary when there is vision loss or the eye cannot be repaired due to trauma or tumors.
• A permanent orbital implant is placed in the eye socket.

After healing, the ophthalmologist will create a prosthetic eye to mimic the appearance of a natural eye.
