What are Floaters?
Floaters are a collection of dark spots or threads that can be seen in the field of vision. They float within the eye in the vitreous fluid and appear as dark dots or threads flying across the line of sight.
Causes of Floaters
Floaters become more noticeable when looking at white surfaces or the sky. Changes in the vitreous fluid with aging cause black spots to appear in the field of vision. Other causes of floaters include vitreous detachment, bleeding in the vitreous fluid, and retinal tears.
Floaters may be more noticeable in people who are nearsighted, have undergone cataract surgery, or suffer from eye inflammation.
It is important to contact the “Roya Hakim” team when experiencing floaters suddenly, a sudden increase in floaters, or flashes of light accompanied by floaters. You should urgently see an eye doctor to perform a retinal exam and ensure there are no retinal tears, treating them if necessary.
Complications of Floaters
Sometimes, floaters may be associated with retinal tears. If these tears are not treated, they can lead to a severe retinal detachment, resulting in vision loss and requiring urgent surgery to repair the retinal detachment.
